INFO/RAC-MAP UNEP is the Regional Activity Centre for Information and Communication of the Barcelona Convention and component of the Executive Coordination Panel (ECP) of the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) - United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

It was established in 1993 by the 22 Contracting Parties of the Barcelona Convention. Managed by the Sicilian Region, with the support of the italian Ministry of the Environment and Protection of the Territory and Sea, is directed by Dr. Sergio Illuminato.

The status, the Director, and the structures of the Centre, its objectives, and its contribution to the UNEP/MAP and the Barcelona Convention are established by the Headquarters Agreement signed on the 19th of October 2004 by the UN’s environmental organization and the Italian Government

INFO/RAC mandate is to support the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols, the Mediterranean Action Plan and the Mediterranean Strategy on Sustainable Development, in the achievement of their objectives, through the provision of services, the dissemination and sharing of environmental information and the strengthening of the communication capabilities of UNEP/MAP and of all the active stakeholders in the Mediterranean region, in order to raise public awareness, assist decision-making processes and promote sustainable development and environmental protection in the Mediterranean basin.

INFO/RAC designs and develops, in particular, the information and communications strategy for environment protection and sustainable development in the Mediterranean through these 3 main instruments:

  • multi-sector international cooperation and partnership agreements,
  • information and communications technological platforms,
  • information, communications, education and public participation projects and campaigns.
